Healthy After-School Snacks for Your Kids

After a long day of learning, playing, and building up an appetite, your kids probably rush home looking for snacks to hold them over until dinnertime.  Gone are the days serving milk and cookies during homework time.  Boost your kids mental capacity and re-fuel them with healthy alternatives.  Depending on the age of your kids, you can get quite creative with your presentation of the snacks.  Make snack time fun time!

Here are a few teeth-friendly snacks that are serve well as after school snacks:

  1. Berry and yogurt parfait:  Yogurt is a super food for both teeth and the entire body.  It’s high in calcium, a building block for strong teeth.  Plus, the probiotics it contains help you digest food, fight bad breath, and keep gums healthy.  Choose plain, full-fat yogurt (such as greek yogurt) and sweeten it with a little Stevia and berries.
  2. Homemade veggie chips:  Baked veggie chips are healthy and very easy to make.  Try using kale, spinach, sweet potatoes or carrots (cut the sweet potatoes and carrots into thin slices).  Simply mix the veggies with enough olive oil to coat them.  Add spices such as garlic or pepper.  Bake in the oven at 350° F for about 12 minutes, flip once, then bake until crispy.
  3. Fruit and cheese kabobs:  These are a quick to make, fun to eat snack that even the kids can make!  Pick some favorite sliced cheeses and fruit, and skewer them on a bamboo stick.  You can even use a cookie cutter to make shapes in the cheese.  Like yogurt, cheese is high in calcium and helps keep teeth strong.

There really is no need to feed your kids unhealthy, processed foods.  These snacks are so delicious, they will be asking for healthy food before you know it!
